Women Enterprise Solutions Ltd (WESO, since 2008, 13 employees)provides credit to women who are unable to access financing due to lack of collateral to secure loans from banks. This helps them to start and run income generating activities and small businesses. The company also provides consumer loans such as education loans, and is working on launching renewable energy loans (solar, biogas). By providing credit to unbanked and financially excluded women in rural Kenya to start and run businesses, WESO gives them an opportunity to get out of poverty and improve their standards of living.
Relevant plans for the near future are to expand deeper into rural Kenya and serve more women (and men). This will be made possible through:
• Partnerships that will help in capacity building and finance linkages
• Intense but targeted marketing
• Acquisition and use of ICT. This will involve upgrading the company software to one that can support mobile and remote banking innovations such as M-Pesa and point of sale (POS) devices
